Building Multi-Tenant SaaS: An Architecture Guide

MOMT Team · March 18, 2026

Multi-tenancy is the backbone of any SaaS. Get it right early and scaling is painless; get it wrong and you'll re-platform later.

The three tenancy models

  • Shared schema — one database, a tenantId on every row. Simplest and cheapest; fine for most SaaS.
  • Schema-per-tenant — stronger isolation, more operational overhead.
  • Database-per-tenant — maximum isolation for enterprise/compliance, highest cost.

Our default

Most products start with a shared schema plus strict row-level scoping and move heavier customers to dedicated resources only when they need it. Don't pay for isolation you don't need yet.
